Charlie Sandercock Reclaims Slim Points Lead With Second-Place Finish At Brighton

Tuesday - August - 2016

TRENTON, Ont. – August 30, 2016 – Charlie Sandercock took the points lead following a second-place finish in the Vanderlaan Building Products Pro Late Models 30-lap event at Brighton Speedway on Saturday night. The race fell on the final Fan Appreciation night of the season which allowed Sandercock to meet fans on the track at intermission.

Sandercock started the night with a second-place finish in his heat behind the wheel of the Bellevue Fabricating/Newham Enterprise/Image Landscape No.57, a strong result with 22 cars in attendance.

“The car was decent and the track was good. There was three heats, so that made it a little easier to make some ground up towards the front in the heat,” said Sandercock.

A ninth-place starting spot was in the cards and Sandercock methodically marched his way to the front. He found his way to the top-five by the halfway point and got by Adam Nayler for third with 10 laps to go.

“We just worked a little bit at a time. There were a lot of good cars ahead of us. It was just a case where you had to take your time, hit your marks and make sure everything stayed good,” Sandercock explained.

A flurry of restarts over the final 10 laps didn’t help the No.57 move forward as leader Brandon Mowat and second-place runner Phil Potts were able to get better restarts, Sandercock said.

“There wasn’t a whole lot I could do. I restarted third numerous times and I was hoping I was going to follow one of the guys to the bottom, but it seems the outside was working better for them,” he said. “(Mowat and Potts) had better cars off the start and it took me a few laps for the car to come in.”

Sandercock kept pace with the top two cars and with two laps remaining, Potts jumped the cushion and Sandercock was able to take over the second spot. The longer run certainly helped him achieve the better result.

“We were lucky enough that Pottsy did slip up a little bit and we were able to get our nose in there and able to bring home second-place. It was good for points,” said Sandercock, who now holds a five-point advantage over Potts in the standings.

Continued Sandercock, “It’s good. I really enjoyed running with those guys. I knew the last couple of laps we weren’t going to take each other out but we were going to race hard. We both want the championship as bad as the other guy.”

Entering the final month of the season, Sandercock knows the point battle will be tight until the very end.

“This is probably the tightest points battle I’ve been involved in. Even though Corey (Earl) and I were tied a couple of years ago, we were never this close. This year it’s been back and forth,” Sandercock said. “It’s been really close and really competitive. I’m looking forward to the end of the year.”

Sandercock will be in action at Brighton with his Pro Late Model for the annual topless race on Sunday, September 4 as part of the Labour Day Classic Weekend. He hopes to have his 360 Sprint Car ready to go as well to compete with the Southern Ontario Sprints. Event details are available at www.brightonspeedway.ca.
